Abergele Hospital Morgue - Wales
History
The former hospital morgue is a small, separate building constructed to support a medical facility that originally operated as a specialized treatment center for long term and respiratory illnesses in the early 20th century. The morgue was positioned away from main patient wards for operational privacy and sanitation standards consistent with hospital design practices of the time. Its interior contains standard features typical of mid-century mortuary facilities, including tiled walls for sterilization, a porcelain post-mortem examination table, and a refrigerated body storage unit. An adjoining room was designated for viewing or temporary holding prior to transfer to funeral services. After the hospital’s function changed and mortality handling procedures were centralized or modernized, the small on site mortuary was decommissioned some time around 2000, in which the mortuary has sat derelict for 25 years.
